In the NFL, it doesn't take much to make the little issues suddenly look like major obstacles. After the supposedly new and improved Cowboys took the field for their season opener versus the Giants and were thoroughly dominated in a 28-20 loss, the finger-pointing started immediately.
This was more than a bad bounce of the ball or typical Week 1 rust. This seemed very much like the same underperforming team that has missed the postseason the past two years and not made it past the divisional round in 30.
Many were ready to label first-time defensive coordinator Christian Parker a bust after 60 minutes of play. Perhaps his scheme was too complicated... or not advanced enough. Maybe the team didn't stock the room with the right players, either talent-
or personality-wise.
And then a video clip came out showing Parker in an intense sideline conversation with rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham. Parker can be seen intently talking with Barham, literally right up in his ear. The third-round draft pick doesn't make eye contact but answers with increasing emotion, until he finally gets up and walks away, shrugging off Parker's hand on his shoulder pads.
Cowboys Nation exploded, trying to decipher what was said and what the perceived outburst may mean moving forward.

Now Parker has addressed the viral moment.
"He was frustrated. It's his first NFL game, and things weren't perfect. It wasn't a fairy tale, at all," Parker told reporters Thursday, per Patrik Walker of the team website.
"Jaishawn cares as much as anybody in that locker room about us winning, number one. But number two, also, our defensive performance. He was frustrated with himself and frustrated with [the way] we played."
The team's defensive shortcomings in their season debut are already very well-documented. It was not the coming-out party anyone in the organization or the fanbase had hoped for, after an offseason of moves that turned over half the defensive personnel and nearly the entire coaching staff on that side of the ball.
But there are 16 more games to play, starting this Sunday. Parker and his players have no choice but to put their Week 1 failures behind them. Barham, in particular, could be called on to do even more against Washington, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer identifying him as one of the options for calling the defensive plays on the field in place of the injured DeMarvion Overshown.
It's a role the rookie already got a taste of late in the game Sunday. Immediately following the loss at Met Life, communication problems were spotlighted by everyone involved as to why the Cowboys played so poorly. The team certainly realized it while it was happening; Parker and Barham- and plenty of others, to be sure- were likely both frustrated in the moment, and rightfully so.
But theirs was the moment to be caught on camera.
The viral video clip has renewed an age-old debate about professional athletes showing real passion in the heat of battle and sometimes letting it bubble over with a teammate or coach into something that can look to outsiders like a deep-seated confrontation rooted in real animosity, rebellion, or even indifference.
Others, like Parker, offer a reminder that it's just the nature of football. It's guys who all want to perform to the best of their abilities and, ultimately, to win. And in every game, half the players on the field fall short of that goal. Sometimes, that hits especially hard, and words are exchanged with a co-worker.
And everybody comes back to the office the next day to make it better.
Many this week are already- just 34 snaps into his NFL career- painting Barham as a problem player and a malcontent based on a 23-second video with no audio and only slightly more context.
Parker is not one of them, and he's ready to put both the Week 1 loss and his much-discussed sideline pep talk with Barham in the rearview.
"I don't think anybody in our building has any doubt of what he's going to do, coming real soon. We don't have any reservations about his mentality."
