Fresh off a late game collapse against the hapless Arizona Cardinals and the 3-5 Dallas Cowboys somehow find themselves encouraged by the direction of their defense. On his weekly radio show with 105.3 The Fan, Jerry Jones offered up support and optimism for his poorly performing franchise, backing the head coach as well as his No. 30 ranked defense.
In all fairness, there aren’t many options for Jones to turn to eight games into the 2026 season. Desirable coaching alternatives are already employed and major schematic overhauls are more trouble than worth. On a staff as young and inexperienced as Dallas’, internal replacement options look more like a step in the wrong direction than a step forward. It’s why Jones may feel no choice but to offer
support.
Citing the solid first half of last week’s game, Jones pointed to the defense’s improvement. “You gotta learn from the negatives,” said Jones. And after shooting down the idea of major overhauls he added, “I like the way we’re trending.”
It’s a tough analysis to accept after the embarrassing implosion last week but it’s not entirely wrong either. Christian Parker’s defense isn’t necessarily an easy defense to install. Given the vanilla nature of last season’s defense and the change in personnel over the offseason, these early-season struggles are understandable. It’s not Parker’s fault his impact was recklessly oversold by fans and media members over the offseason.
Alignment issues, communication, and situational awareness do fall on his lap, and first-time coordinator or not, there are issues he has to own. For the Cowboys to move forward as a defense, accountability is critical and it appears some of that is taking place in real time this year.
Snap counts and rotations have altered based on performance. Young players have had to earn their snaps with disciplined play on the field. Grooming a young roster like the Cowboys’ takes time, especially when a new coordinator is learning on the job as well.
It’s never been in the Cowboys’ nature to act impulsively during the season by making coaching changes, so anyone looking to that course of action will probably be disappointed. The Cowboys are going to see this through because they don’t really have much of a choice. A losing record may win the NFC East and since Dallas’ first round pick probably lands in New York this year, the Cowboys might as well see this thing through.
