Seattle running back Velus Jones Jr. was released Tuesday to make room on the Seahawks' 53-man roster.
Seattle activated wide receiver Irv Charles from injured reserve on Tuesday. Jones Jr. was signed to the Seahawks' practice squad after being released.
Because Jones Jr. is a vested veteran, he is not subject to waivers, allowing Seattle to sign him back to its practice squad immediately rather than having to wait one day for him to clear waivers.
"He's a dominant gunner," Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider said after Charles was placed on injured reserve before the start of the season. "He came in today and we talked, and I forgot how big he was. I gave him a hug and felt like I was at his waist. He's running
22 miles an hour, and he's just a monster special teams player. It's definitely worth waiting for."
Jones Jr. played at Tennessee from 2020-21 and appeared in 23 games. He totaled 84 receptions, 1,087 receiving yards, 10 receiving touchdowns and 31 rushing yards for the Vols.
Jones Jr. was selected in the third round by Chicago in the 2022 NFL draft (No. 71 overall).
We've signed RB Velus Jones Jr. to the practice squad.
