Offensive lineman Cade Mays returned to practice Wednesday for Detroit in Week 5 of the NFL season.
The former Vol suffered a wrist injury during training camp. On Aug. 10, Detroit head coach Dan Campbell said Mays' injury would keep him out a "significant period of time."
Former Stanford head coach David Shaw is in his second season with the Lions. He is serving as Detroit's pass game specialist in 2026 and discussed Mays' return to practice.
"I'm excited to get him back because we think he has a chance to be very, very good and is a good fit for us," Shaw said. "As much as anything it adds depth to our offensive line, which we've been banged up the last couple of games.
"Getting him back and whenever he's ready to get back on the field (on gamedays)
is great, but Juice (Scruggs) has played well for us as well, and one thing I know for sure is if there's any place you need depth it's the offensive line."
