Detroit concluded its NFL preseason Aug. 29. The Lions made roster cuts on Sunday ahead of their regular season kicking off Sept. 13.
Jared Goff and Joshua Dobbs are Detroit's quarterbacks on roster after Sunday's NFL 53-man deadline. Rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer was waived by the Lions on Sunday.
Detroit quarterback Teddy Bridgewater also retired from the NFL on Aug. 9.
Following Sunday's roster transactions, Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman highlighted Dobbs' experience and familiarity with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
"Credit Altmyer for making the backup competition much closer than most predicted when Dobbs signed after Bridgewater's retirement," Twentyman said. "Altmyer sees the field well and plays with a lot of confidence, but
Dobbs' experience and familiarity with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing ultimately won out. Dobbs sealed the deal with his performance in the final preseason game in Indianapolis. Altmyer could be a candidate for the practice squad if he clears waivers."
Petzing was Arizona's offensive coordinator from 2023-25 when Dobbs was with the Cardinals in 2023. The two were also together in 2022 with the Browns. Petzing served as Cleveland's quarterbacks coach.
On Aug. 10, Dobbs signed a one-year contract with the Lions worth $1.425 million and $475,000 fully guaranteed.
