Mercedes Russell signed with Indiana (20-12) in the WNBA on Monday. The former Lady Vol will wear jersey No. 5 with the Fever.
She joins Indiana with 12 games remaining in the regular season. The WNBA playoffs will tip off Sept. 27.
"TheIndiana Fever have signed center Mercedes Russell, it was announced today," Indiana announced Monday in a press release. "Russell joins the team as a season-ending injury exception following Damiris Dantas’ recent knee surgery."
Russell was selected in the first round of the 2018 WNBA draft (No. 22 overall) by New York. She played for the Liberty (2018), Seattle (2018-24) and Los Angeles (2025). Russell is a two-time WNBA champion (2018, 2020).
The former Lady Vol also played professionally in Turkey and China.
Russell
played at Tennessee from 2013-18. She appeared in 120 games, including 87 starts. She is from Springfield High School in Springfield, Oregon.
Indiana will next play on Tuesday versus New York. Tipoff between the Fever and Liberty is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EDT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana (ESPN).
