Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 8 five times and have a 5-0 record.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 8 in 2018. The Vols defeated East Tennessee State, 59-3, at Neyland Stadium.

The contest marked a return to Knoxville for East Tennessee State head coach Randy Sanders, a former quarterback, assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the Vols.

Jarrett Guarantano started for Tennessee and completed 8-of-13 passing attempts for 154 yards. Keller Chryst also played and completed 3-of-3 passing attempts for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Tim Jordan led Tennessee with 65 rushing yards on 15 attempts. Jeremy Banks recorded 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Marquez Callaway totaled five

receptions for 78 yards and Jordan Murphy recorded three receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown.

Tennessee also defeated Georgia State (2012), Southern Miss (2007), Arkansas (2001) and Mississippi State (1990) on Sept. 8 all time.
