Tennessee will open its 2026 football season on Saturday when it hosts Furman (1-0). Kickoff between the Vols and Paladins is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT at Neyland Stadium (SEC Network+).
Clint Dempsey is one of Furman's most notable athletes in school history. He played at Furman from 2001-03 and scored 17 goals and recorded 19 assists (53 points).
Dempsey competed for the United States Under-20 National Team from 2002-03.
He was selected No. 8 overall in 2004 during the MLS SuperDraft by New England. Dempsey was named 2004 MLS Rookie of the Year and played for the Revolution from 2004-06. He appeared in 84 matches and scored 26 goals.
Dempsey played in the English Premier League with Fulham (2007-12) and Tottenham (2012-13). He appeared in 218 EPL
matches and totaled 57 goals and 19 assists.
Dempsey returned to MLS with Seattle. He played for the Sounders from 2013-18, appearing in 136 matches and scored 57 goals.
Dempsey also played for Team USA from 2004-17. He appeared in 141 international matches and recorded 57 goals. Dempsey played in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014).
