It's that time of year in college football, when struggling coaches are fired with programs hoping they can get in on the ground floor with a potential replacement. Given how stellar the Michigan football defense has been, defensive coordinator Jay Hill's name has been tossed out there as a potential hire for a school looking for a new head coach.
Though some had surmised that Hill no longer had aspirations to oversee a program, he said on Wednesday that's not the case.
"Well, sure, absolutely. I loved my time as a head coach," Hill said. "That was something special to me, that relationship with my players and all that stuff.
"But right now, that's not the focus, it can't be the attention. I owe it to my players to be all locked in to where my feet
are right now. My feet are at Michigan, and doing everything I can to have the best defense in the country."
Of course, regardless of what happens this season in Ann Arbor, the program would love to retain Hill, one way or another. But with schools like Maryland having ousted their head coach, it wouldn't be surprising to see Hill get some traction with some programs looking for a turnaround in short order.
Hill had been the head coach at Weber State for nine years, and he was 68-39 in that timeframe. He won four Big Sky Championships before ultimately going to BYU where he oversaw the defense in Provo for four seasons. He departed Kalani Sitake's program to follow his former defensive coordinator and mentor, Kyle Whittingham, to Ann Arbor.
Michigan currently has the No. 2 total defense in the country and is ranked first in yards per play allowed.
