The University of Michigan has had something of a leadership gulf in recent years. After university president Mark Schlissel was ousted for having an inappropriate relationship, U-M hired Santa J. Ono for the post, but he only lasted a few years before he tried to escape to Florida, only to be rejected by UF. In the meantime, Domenico Grasso, who had overseen the Dearborn campus, has served in an interim fashion. Michigan had hired Kent Syverud from Syracuse, but he's now fighting cancer, and stepped down before having been sworn in. Thus, Grasso has continued in his role.
Now it appears that Michigan has a new target who is expected to be sworn in on December 1.
According to reports, and this from the Detroit News, Michigan is set to hire C.
Cybele Raver, who has been at Vanderbilt as provost since 2021.
Vanderbilt University Provost C. Cybele Raver is set to be the next president of the University of Michigan, according to two sources familiar with the selection, making her the second woman in history to lead the school and marking the second time this year the university has chosen a leader at a private university to lead one of the top public schools in the nation.
The only other female president in university history has been Mary Sue Coleman, who had two stints leading the maize and blue.
Raver has no ties to the University of Michigan, as she received her undergraduate degree from Harvard and her MA and PhD from Yale.
