Ryan Blaney's NASCAR Cup Series championship hopes suffered a devastating blow during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Team Penske driver started 27th and finished 38th after a major accident eliminated him during the second stage.
Blaney entered Talladega fifth in the championship standings, trailing Kyle Larson by 40 points with three races remaining. His afternoon initially appeared promising as he worked through the field and finished eighth in Stage 1, earning valuable championship points.
However, Blaney's race ended suddenly on Lap 132 when he lost momentum while running behind teammate Joey Logano in the outside drafting lane. The resulting contact and traffic disruption triggered a 12-car accident involving several
championship contenders.
Blaney's No. 12 Ford sustained significant damage, preventing him from continuing after completing 131 laps. The early retirement left him 38th and limited his points total to four.
Blaney dropped one position to sixth in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings with 2,334 points. He now trails championship leader Kyle Larson by 107 points, a substantial increase from his pre-race deficit. Although Blaney remains mathematically eligible for the championship, he faces an extremely difficult task entering the final two races at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
