Gio Ruggiero appeared poised for another strong performance at Talladega Superspeedway before a mechanical problem derailed his afternoon Friday. The Tricon Garage driver started fourth, led five laps and won Stage 1 before ultimately finishing 25th in the Love's RV Stop 225.
Ruggiero entered the event as the defending Talladega winner and immediately demonstrated competitive speed. His No. 17 Toyota remained among the leaders throughout the opening stage, eventually moving into first place as competitors battled through multiple drafting lanes.
Ruggiero secured the stage victory when a major accident brought the opening segment to an early conclusion. However, his afternoon changed dramatically during the subsequent pit stops. The Toyota experienced
a transmission-related problem and became stuck in reverse on pit road, forcing Ruggiero to spend significant time attempting to resolve the issue.
Although he eventually returned to competition, the lost time prevented him from challenging for the victory. Ruggiero completed just 57 laps and finished 25th, earning 22 points, including his stage victory. He remains sixth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Chase standings with 2,194 points.
However, Ruggiero trails championship leader Kaden Honeycutt by 177 markers, mathematically eliminating him from title contention. He will attempt to rebound at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
