Austin Hill nearly delivered a stunning victory in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway before a fuel-related problem disrupted his final-lap charge. The Richard Childress Racing driver qualified second and led six laps in his No. 33 Chevrolet, establishing himself as a serious contender.
Hill immediately moved into the lead when the green flag waved and controlled the opening six laps. He remained competitive throughout the afternoon, using his experience in drafting races to stay among the leading competitors. Hill also finished 10th in Stage 2, continuing a strong showing against NASCAR Cup Series regulars.
When the race entered overtime, Hill found himself battling near the front alongside Kyle Larson and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. His
aggressive push helped Larson maintain momentum before Hill moved underneath the No. 5 Chevrolet on the final lap.
That maneuver shuffled Larson backward and temporarily positioned Hill to challenge for the victory. However, Hill's Chevrolet began running out of fuel coming off Turn 4, ending his chance of reaching Victory Lane. He ultimately finished 14th after completing all 189 laps.
Although the result fell short of his potential, Hill demonstrated that he could compete with established Cup Series veterans at NASCAR's largest superspeedway. His performance included six laps led and a significant role in the dramatic finish.
