Bubba Wallace endured a frustrating afternoon in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, finishing 22nd after being involved in a major accident during the second stage. The 23XI Racing driver started 25th and entered the event hoping to strengthen his position in the NASCAR Cup Series championship Chase.
Wallace initially remained competitive as the field worked through an opening stage dominated by fuel conservation. However, his afternoon changed dramatically on Lap 132 when Ryan Blaney lost momentum in the outside drafting lane.
Wallace, who was receiving a push from behind, could not avoid contact with Blaney, contributing to a 12-car accident. The damage forced Wallace to make repairs and cost him valuable track position. His
race became even more challenging when he had to return to pit road with a tire problem around Lap 167.
Wallace ultimately completed 185 laps, finishing 22nd and four laps behind winner Kyle Larson. The result earned him 15 points but significantly damaged his remaining championship hopes.
Wallace slipped to 13th in the Chase standings with 2,223 points, trailing Larson by 218 markers. He has been mathematically eliminated from title contention and will now focus on improving his championship position at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
