Hendrick Motorsports has five drivers for four NASCAR Cup Series seats again. After hiring Connor Zilisch to replace Alex Bowman in 2028, this leaves Corey Day without a seat with Hendrick Motorsports in the Cup Series. However, does this mean that Day will be out of luck moving forward?
During a press conference, Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick addressed Day's status for the 2027 NASCAR season and beyond.
“Well, first of all, Corey Day is a tremendous talent, and our plan is for him to be in our future for a long time," Hendrick said. "People don’t realize he’s only been on pavement about half a year, so it’s going to be good to watch him grow. We have plans for him that go well beyond the next couple of years, so when the time is right,
he’ll move up. But for right now, Corey’s learning. We want to run for the championship in the O’Reilly car next year. We’re excited about him. I love the youth. I love the enthusiasm. I love the energy and the talent.
Day will return to Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR O'Reilly Series in 2027, with plans far into the future. It is unclear what Hendrick Motorsports is planning to do with Day in the Cup Series at this time. For now, Day will continue his development and chase an O'Reilly Series championship in 2027.
