23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin has provided an important update on Riley Herbst's injury status following a frightening accident during Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. Herbst suffered multiple hard impacts in the closing laps of the YellaWood 500, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming race at Martinsville Speedway.
The incident occurred on Lap 183 when Carson Hocevar made contact with Joey Logano, triggering a massive 15-car accident. While Logano's Ford overturned, Herbst's No. 35 Toyota slammed into the outside wall before sliding across the track and striking the inside barrier nearly head-on. Safety personnel eventually assisted Herbst from his heavily damaged vehicle.
Speaking on his Actions
Detrimental podcast Monday, Hamlin revealed that Herbst was dealing with several injuries following the accident. "He's got some bumps and bruises," Hamlin said. "Obviously his wrist is not great, so he'll get checked out this week." Herbst was evaluated and released from Talladega's infield care center but was later seen with his left wrist wrapped.
The situation is particularly concerning because Herbst suffered a concussion following an accident at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in August. He subsequently missed the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, with Harrison Burton replacing him. Herbst was eventually cleared to return at Darlington Raceway after his symptoms subsided.
Herbst remains listed as the driver of the No. 35 Toyota for Sunday's Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway. However, 23XI Racing has not publicly confirmed a specific diagnosis from his Talladega accident or announced whether additional medical evaluations could affect his participation. No replacement driver has been announced as the organization prepares for the penultimate race of the 2026 season.
