Jesse Love overcame a challenging afternoon to finish third in Saturday's The Progress Group 250 at Talladega Superspeedway, preserving his NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series championship lead. The Richard Childress Racing driver started from the pole, marking his fifth consecutive Talladega pole position in the series.
Despite his impressive qualifying performance, Love struggled to remain near the front during the opening stages as JR Motorsports controlled the dominant drafting lanes. His afternoon became more difficult following the first stage when a pit-road penalty for improper fueling forced him to restart at the rear of the field.
Love steadily recovered but failed to score stage points in either segment, allowing several championship
contenders to reduce their deficits. During the final stage, Love worked with the leading group and positioned himself to capitalize on the closing-lap battle.
He eventually charged to third behind Sammy Smith and Carson Kvapil, recording another top-five finish at Talladega. The performance earned Love 34 points and allowed him to maintain first place in the championship standings with 2,401 points. However, his advantage over Justin Allgaier decreased from 36 to 19 points.
Love enters Martinsville with a narrow championship lead and two races remaining to secure the title.
