Alex Bowman gained 15 positions Sunday at Kansas Speedway, recovering from a 33rd-place starting position to finish 18th. Bowman was placed near the rear of the field after rain prevented the Cup Series from holding its scheduled qualifying session.
The No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet did not have the speed of teammate Kyle Larson but steadily advanced through traffic. Bowman avoided the significant incidents, stayed on the lead lap and completed all 267 circuits.
Bowman earned 19 points for the 18th-place finish. He is not among the 16 drivers competing for the Cup Series title, so his points are outside the Chase championship structure. Still, moving from 33rd to 18th made Bowman one of the race’s bigger position gainers and allowed Hendrick
Motorsports to place all four of its cars on the lead lap at the finish.
