Ross Chastain recovered from an eventful afternoon to finish fourth in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Trackhouse Racing driver started 15th and overcame involvement in the first major accident before returning to contention during the dramatic overtime finish.
Chastain was among the competitors collected in the 12-car crash on Lap 132, which began when Ryan Blaney lost momentum in the outside drafting lane. Unlike several drivers whose races ended in the incident, Chastain was able to continue and remain competitive.
The closing laps featured multiple changes at the front, and Chastain played an important role in the final-lap battle. His Chevrolet helped Kyle Larson regain momentum after the eventual winner fell outside
the top 10.
Chastain remained with the leading group through the tri-oval, crossing the finish line fourth behind Larson, William Byron and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The result provided a valuable points boost after Chastain missed the championship Chase.
He moves up one position to 18th in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings with 706 points, putting him two points ahead of Brad Keselowski. Chastain will look to continue climbing the standings at Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
