Chase Briscoe suffered a devastating setback to his NASCAR Cup Series championship hopes during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver started from the pole but finished 33rd after being involved in the massive accident on Lap 183.
Briscoe entered Talladega third in the Chase standings, trailing Kyle Larson by just 24 points. A strong performance offered an opportunity to close that gap with only three races remaining entering the weekend.
His afternoon initially appeared promising. Briscoe finished seventh in Stage 1 and improved to third in Stage 2, securing valuable championship points while remaining competitive. However, the final stage ended disastrously when a 15-car accident erupted near the front
of the field.
Briscoe was among the drivers collected, with his Toyota sustaining significant front-end damage. The incident ended his afternoon after 183 laps, leaving him 33rd and earning just 16 points. Briscoe slipped one position to fourth in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings with 2,362 points.
He now trails Larson by 79 points, a significant increase from the 24-point deficit he faced entering Talladega. Briscoe remains mathematically eligible for the championship but faces a difficult challenge entering Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
