AJ Allmendinger endured a difficult afternoon during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, finishing 31st after being involved in the massive accident with five scheduled laps remaining. The Kaulig Racing driver qualified 37th and faced the challenge of working through a competitive field.
Allmendinger spent much of the opening portion of the event navigating the changing drafting conditions while several competitors employed aggressive fuel-saving strategies. His No. 16 Chevrolet remained in competition through the opening stages, allowing him to advance as the race developed.
However, the closing portion of the event proved especially challenging as the field became increasingly aggressive while positioning for the finish. On Lap
183, a 15-car accident erupted near the front of the field.
Allmendinger was among the competitors collected, and the resulting damage ended his afternoon. He finished 31st after completing 183 laps, earning six points from the event. The disappointing result prevented Allmendinger from improving his position in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings.
He remains 24th with 580 points after missing the championship Chase. With only two races remaining, Allmendinger will attempt to rebound from his Talladega retirement and secure stronger finishes at Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
