Noah Gragson overcame involvement in a major accident to finish 20th in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Front Row Motorsports driver started 39th and entered the event facing the challenge of advancing through a competitive 40-car field.
Gragson spent the opening portion of the race navigating the draft while several teams employed different fuel-saving strategies. His race took a difficult turn on Lap 132 when a 12-car accident erupted on the backstretch.
Gragson was among those collected in the incident, which also involved several competitors battling for the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Although the crash forced some drivers to retire, Gragson was able to continue and salvage a respectable finish.
He ultimately completed
186 laps and crossed the finish line 20th, three laps behind winner Kyle Larson. The result represented a gain of 19 positions from his original starting spot, even though he could not overcome the time lost during the accident.
Gragson earned 17 points and maintained his position in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings. He remains 31st with 447 points after missing the championship Chase. With just two races remaining, Gragson will attempt to build upon the recovery effort at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
