Connor Zilisch showed encouraging speed during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway before a late accident ended his afternoon in 29th place. The Trackhouse Racing rookie qualified third, giving himself an excellent opportunity to compete near the front of the field.
Zilisch started alongside several established superspeedway competitors and remained competitive throughout the opening portions of the race. The No. 88 Chevrolet delivered another promising showing in Stage 2, with Zilisch finishing seventh and earning four stage points.
His strong qualifying effort and stage performance demonstrated continued development during his first full NASCAR Cup Series season. However, Zilisch's opportunity to secure a strong finish ended when
the massive 15-car accident occurred on Lap 183.
He was among the competitors involved and could not continue, finishing 29th after completing 183 laps. Despite the disappointing result, Zilisch was officially the highest-finishing rookie in the race.
The finish earned him 12 points, including his stage points, but he slipped one position in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings. Zilisch now ranks 34th with 372 points, two behind Ty Dillon. The rookie will attempt to end his debut season on a positive note at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
