Taylor Gray suffered a significant setback to his NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series championship hopes during Saturday's The Progress Group 250 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver started 17th, led one lap and finished 21st after being involved in a multicar accident.
Gray initially demonstrated competitive speed, finishing seventh in Stage 1 and collecting four valuable championship points. His No. 54 Toyota also benefited from a two-tire strategy following Stage 2, which helped him gain track position entering the final segment. However, Gray's afternoon changed dramatically on Lap 57 when contact involving Harrison Burton triggered an accident near the front of the field.
Gray spun after contact with Carson Kvapil, collecting
Austin Hill and Brandon Jones in the incident. Although the damage did not end Gray's race, he lost valuable track position and struggled to recover during the remaining laps. Gray ultimately finished 21st, completing all 94 laps and earning 20 points. The disappointing result dropped him farther behind championship leader Jesse Love.
Gray remains eighth in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Chase standings with 2,246 points, trailing Love by 155 markers. The deficit mathematically eliminates him from championship contention with just Martinsville and Homestead-Miami remaining.
