Alex Bowman is set to retire from the NASCAR Cup Series after the 2027 season, meaning Hendrick Motorsports has to find a replacement. The No. 48 car is one of NASCAR's most premier rides, and several drivers will want the seat. However, Hendrick Motorsports will have a short list for the No. 48 car moving forward.
Hendrick Motorsports president and general manager Jeff Andrews jumped on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio and revealed a major update on the team's pursuit of Bowman's replacement.
"You know, a lot of it today is the fit, right?" Andrews said. "And [Rick Hendrick] talks about it a lot in the culture that we have at Hendrick Motorsports. [Alex Bowman] has been a big part of that and fits into that. And so we're going to begin a search here very,
very shortly for what's next for the No. 48 team in Hendrick Motorsports. And I think as we begin that search, a big part of that is the fit. And the personality to come into our organization and be able to work with our other three guys and be a good teammate. Some big shoes to fill there because Alex has done a great job."
Hendrick Motorsports has over one year to find the perfect replacement for Bowman, with Connor Zilisch and Corey Day being the frontrunners. For now, Bowman and the No. 48 team will focus on winning in 2026 and 2027, while Hendrick Motorsports looks to find its next driver for the 2028 season.
