Gray Gaulding delivered an encouraging performance during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, leading five laps before ultimately finishing 23rd. Gaulding qualified 40th in his No. 66 Ford but quickly demonstrated that he could take advantage of the unusual drafting conditions.
While much of the field focused on conserving fuel during the opening stage, Gaulding moved into the lead on Lap 26. He remained out front through Lap 30, leading five consecutive circuits against a field that included several NASCAR Cup Series champions and established superspeedway winners.
Maintaining that position proved difficult as strategies shifted and the larger drafting groups regained momentum. Gaulding's afternoon became more challenging when
he was involved in the 12-car accident on Lap 132. However, he managed to keep his Ford in competition despite losing valuable track position.
The closing portion of the race featured another major accident and an overtime restart, but Gaulding was unable to recover the lost laps. He ultimately completed 185 laps and finished 23rd, four laps behind winner Kyle Larson.
Despite finishing outside the top 20, Gaulding gained 17 positions from his qualifying effort and led laps in a competitive Cup Series field. The performance provided a notable highlight during his Talladega appearance.
