Formula 1 competed at Azerbaijan and it was a unique weekend. The sport raced on a Saturday, which is different than its normal Sunday slot. While Kimi Antonelli crashed in qualifying, it opened the door to a new winner this weekend. At the end of the day, it still was a Mercedes driver on top of the podium.
George Russell and the No. 63 team for Mercedes won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, earning their third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Russell was able to hold off Max Verstappen, who closed the gap to a very narrow margin. Instead of a Verstappen victory, Russell claimed a much needed win in Formula 1.
It has been hard for Russell, who has been the second best Mercedes driver during the 2026 Formula 1 season. Antonelli still controls the championship,
but it was a nice reminder that Russell is capable of winning too. For now, Antonelli is the championship leader, but Russell wants to make it a fight.
