Erik Jones appeared capable of delivering a strong finish during Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway before being eliminated in a late accident. The Legacy Motor Club driver started 29th and advanced through the field, eventually leading six laps in his No. 43 Toyota.
Jones first moved into the lead on Lap 109 and remained out front for three consecutive laps during the second stage. He returned to the top position on Lap 152, leading another three laps as the final stage began taking shape.
Jones also finished ninth in Stage 2, earning additional points while demonstrating that his Toyota could compete against the leading organizations. However, his chances of producing a top-10 finish disappeared when a massive accident unfolded
on Lap 183.
Jones was among the 15 drivers collected in the incident, which brought out a lengthy red flag and forced the race into overtime. The damage ended his afternoon after 183 laps, leaving him with a 28th-place finish.
Jones earned 11 points from the event and maintained his position in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings. He remains 21st with 618 points after missing the championship Chase. Jones will attempt to translate his competitive Talladega speed into stronger finishing results at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
