Todd Gilliland turned a difficult starting position into one of the strongest performances of his afternoon Sunday, finishing seventh in the YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The Front Row Motorsports driver qualified 35th but steadily advanced through the field while navigating the event's unpredictable drafting conditions.
Gilliland made his presence known at the front during multiple portions of the race, ultimately leading six laps. His strongest opportunity came during the final stage when the massive accident on Lap 183 eliminated several leading contenders.
Gilliland inherited the lead as the caution waved and remained in front through the subsequent cleanup period. He led the field back to green for the overtime restart, giving
himself an opportunity to compete for the victory.
However, shifting drafting lanes during the final two laps prevented Gilliland from maintaining the lead. He ultimately finished seventh, gaining 28 positions from his original starting spot and collecting valuable championship points.
The performance helped Gilliland climb one position to 22nd in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings with 612 points, moving three points ahead of Josh Berry. Having missed the championship Chase, Gilliland will attempt to continue that progress at Martinsville before the season concludes at Homestead-Miami.
