Christopher Bell experienced a disastrous afternoon in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, finishing 35th after an early pit-road accident significantly damaged his championship hopes. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver started sixth and entered the race just five points behind championship leader Kyle Larson.
Bell briefly moved into the lead during the opening stage, pacing three laps before attempting a green-flag pit stop on Lap 56. However, his Toyota lost control while entering pit road and struck the inside wall, sustaining significant right-front damage.
The problems continued after Bell returned to competition. A tire rub caused a right-front tire failure, forcing another pit stop. His crew was then penalized for having too many
team members over the wall. A second right-front tire failure added to the difficulties, leaving Bell several laps behind the leaders.
Bell ultimately completed 177 laps before retiring with a suspension-related issue, finishing 35th and earning just two points. The disappointing result dropped Bell one position to third in the NASCAR Cup Series Chase standings with 2,367 points.
He now trails Larson by 74 points after entering Talladega only five behind. Bell remains mathematically eligible for the title but faces a difficult challenge with Martinsville and Homestead-Miami remaining.
