Ever since Courtney Banghart took over as head coach of the UNC women's basketball program, top-ranked recruits want to play in Chapel Hill.
Banghart's top addition is Kate Harpring, the class of 2026's top-ranked overall recruit. Harpring is primed for a massive role in her first collegiate season this fall, starting with the Tar Heels' October 18 exhibition vs. Davidson.
On Thursday, Banghart further proved herself as a recruiting wizard, landing a commitment from class of 2027 point guard Micah Ojo. Ranked sixth overall in the SC Next 100, Ojo chose North Carolina over Vanderbilt and archival Duke.
Entering her senior high school season, Ojo is the reigning Gatorade Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year, nearly averaging a double-double
with 16.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Ojo is also quite the defensive ace, averaging 2.7 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.
UNC prides itself on defense, allowing under 60 points per game last year, while holding its final six opponents under 70. The Tar Heels carried plenty of offense on their squad, but lost their top four scorers from last season.

North Carolina's 2026-27 squad will be young but talented, led by Harpring in the backcourt and Ciera Toomey down low. Nyla Brooks and Reniya Kelly give UNC a few familiar faces, while reserves like Blanca Thomas will have to prove themselves again.
The Tar Heels made their second-straight Sweet 16 appearance a season ago, beating Western Illinois and Maryland en route to facing National Runner-Up UConn. North Carolina has the talent to make another run this year.
Harpring landed in Chapel Hill as a top overall recruit, with Ojo next girl up. Banghart can recruit, with hopes those off-court wins soon turn into championships.
