After another big upset away from Kenan Stadium, the UNC football team returns to North Carolina this weekend for a crucial ACC matchup.
On Saturday at 3:30 p.m., the Tar Heels make a short trip up 15-501 to face archrival Duke. UNC is hoping to snap a 2-game losing streak in the annual Victory Bell battle, while the Blue Devils are hoping to avenge last weekend's last-minute loss at Georgia Tech.
North Carolina enters Wallace Wade Stadium fresh off the first ranked victory of Bill Belichick's collegiate coaching career, a 21-17 win over then-25th-ranked Pitt. The Tar Heels (3-2, 1-1 ACC) scored two touchdowns in three minutes, forced three consecutive turnovers on downs and celebrated a monumental victory inside Acrisure Stadium.
Duke (4-1, 1-1
ACC) is one minute away from entering Saturday's rivalry clash undefeated and possibly ranked. The Blue Devils overcame an 11-point, second half deficit and took a late, fourth quarter lead on Nate Sheppard's second touchdown run. The Blue Devils' typically-strong defense allowed a last-minute touchdown, putting the first blemish on their previously-perfect schedule.
UNC's defense seems to discover new stars each week, most recently redshirt junior defensive back Tre Miller, who earned weekly national honors from PFF and the ACC. Billy Edwards responded from another rough start, throwing touchdown passes to tight ends Jelani Thurman and Shamar Easter, while Jordan Shipp continued showcasing himself as North Carolina's top offensive weapon.
The Tar Heels will cherish every minute of Saturday's battle, trying to surpass their archrivals in the ACC standings and win back the Victory Bell. Keep reading below for our game preview, which includes UNC's key to victory, something to watch, odds, statistical leaders and a season schedule.
Key to Victory
Generate consistent offense in the second half.
North Carolina scored 14 of its 21 points at Pitt in the second half, including a 75-yard, fourth quarter touchdown strike from Edwards to Easter. Duke allowed a Georgia Tech touchdown in the final minute, leading to its first loss.
The Tar Heels want to start stronger offensively, but also finish stronger late. If UNC finds a way to score plentiful after halftime, the Victory Bell will be spray-painted Carolina Blue once again.
Something to Watch
If Nate Sheppard will play.
Duke's sophomore running back, one of the country's best, is officially listed as questionable on Wednesday's injury report.
Sheppard already has 743 yards and eight touchdowns through five games, both Top-10 amongst FBS backs. Add 161 receiving yards and three receiving scores, Sheppard is a multi-faceted star who overwhelms any opponent.
UNC's run defense is a glaring weakness, despite pulling through late in Pittsburgh. North Carolina will beat the Blue Devils if it can neutralize Sheppard, but if injury forces the star out of action, victory becomes much easier.
