The North Carolina Tar Heels have four more football games to discover their 2026 fate. Needing two more wins to reach bowl eligiblity, UNC's next test comes in New England.
On Saturday, November 7 at 12 p.m., North Carolina will kick off against an independent UConn squad with the same record. The Tar Heels (4-4, 2-3 ACC) traded punches with top-ranked Miami (FL)
a week ago, while the Huskies (4-4) lost 35-26 at Air Force.UConn doesn't pose nearly the same level of competition compared to the Hurricanes (8-0, 6-0 ACC), but that's no reason for UNC to overlook its next opponent. North Carolina led a then-2-win Syracuse team throughout their October 24 clash in Chapel Hill, then lost in overtime.
The Tar Heels can score against anyone, with quarterback
Billy Edwards leading the charge in recent weeks. Jordan Shipp is the WR1 UNC needs to unlock its full offensive potential, while Jelani Thurman ranks amongst the country's best tight ends. North Carolina has three starting running backs in its overcrowded room, headlined by sophomore returner Demon June.
The Tar Heels' defense, once thought to be a massive improvement from 2025, now struggles to get stops. UNC only forced Miami to punt once on Halloween night, allowing over 400 yards for the second straight week. UConn averages 437.6 yards per game, giving North Carolina's defense yet another daunting task.
The Tar Heels need to win Saturday and avoid their first 3-game slide this fall. Keep reading below for our game preview, which includes UNC's key to victory, something to watch, odds, statistical leaders and a season schedule.
Key to Victory
Generate pressure up front.
Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah is a Heisman Trophy candidate, showing why with three touchdown passes and nearly 300 yards against North Carolina. The Tar Heels only sacked Mensah once and, throughout Halloween night, failed to generate pressure and disrupt Mensah's rhythm.
UNC once had one of college football's best pass-rushes, but that is no longer. UConn allowed 25 sacks through its first eight games, so there's hope for North Carolina in the trenches this Saturday.
Something to Watch
If Edwards continues to play at a high level.
Tar Heel Nation gave Edwards plenty of flack for his inconsistency in previous games, missing wide-open receivers and barely reaching the 60 percent completion mark.
Edwards was the Tar Heels' main reason they had a chance to upset Miami last week, completing 28 passes for 341 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. The Hurricanes' defense is no slouch either, making Edwards' career night all more impressive.
UConn allows 389 yards per game, which ranks bottom-40 amongst FBS schools. Edwards has another chance to carve an opposing like a Thanksgiving turkey on Saturday.
