With road comebacks against strong competition in their previous two football games, the North Carolina Tar Heels entered Saturday's return home with plenty of momentum and hope they finally turned a corner.
UNC welcomed a lowly Syracuse squad to Chapel Hill
, one that entered without an ACC win. The Orange had three one-score losses, showcasing they're better than their record, but are a team North Carolina should beat comfortably.Instead, the Tar Heels lost 31-30 in a game defined late by poor defense and spotty offense. Whatever excitement UNC (4-3, 2-2 ACC) fans had, is now gone after Saturday's inexcusable defeat.
North Carolina had multiple chances to put this game away, starting with a 10-point lead in the first quarter. The Tar Heels settled
for a fourth quarter field goal, just feet from the end zone, then turned it over on downs during a potential, game-winning drive with a minute left. Billy Edwards threw for a season-high 271 yards, but missed a couple wide-open pass-catchers on tough throws.
UNC's fourth-quarter defense defined wins at Pitt and Duke. Saturday was a different story, with North Carolina allowing 21 points after halftime. Syracuse (3-4, 1-4 ACC) quarterback Steve Angeli completed several big passes, including a 76-yard strike to Umari Hatcher and the game-winners to Calvin Russell. The Orange nearly hit 200 rushing yards, punishing a Tar Heel defense that allowed 455 yards total.
North Carolina can wonder "what if," but there's no reason Saturday night should be a loss. Let's take a look at several, postgame social media reactions below.
Offensive collapse loomed large.
North Carolina let that one slip away. 3 weeks of not closing finally caught up. That being said the process is working and on schedule. And as an added bonus an upset at home next week puts your team in the mix for the league championship over the last month of the season. Can’t…

UNC shouldn't rely on a late defensive stand
Multiple things are true:
— Isaac Schade (@isaacschade) October 25, 2026
1 UNC shouldn't have been in position to need a 2-pt conversion stop to win
2 I don't think the BALL crossed the pylon (doesn't matter if his foot kicked it, matters where the ball was)
3 Why don't we have a definitive down-the-goal-line camera angle? https://t.co/J38U7amU0o
That ball doesn’t cross the goal line

Shocking loss for #UNC.
— Grant Hughes (@GrantHughesNC) October 25, 2026
Shouldn’t have come down to it for the Heels, but how does the ACC not have a view down-the-line for that game-deciding two-point conversion?
Don’t care. He caught the ball but that ball did not look like it crossed the goal line.

TRENDING: UNC fans are calling for an investigation into the referees following Syracuse’s controversial 31-30 overtime victory.

The ball clearly never crossed the goal line on the game-winning 2-point conversion, but officials still ruled it good.

I'm not sure at all but they had no replay view to overturn it. We are now back to the typical UNC football experience! It was a fun 2 weeks 😂

Questionable play calling or poor player performance?
Offense lost the game in the last 20 minutes of regulation. Get ball twice up 20-10, do nothing. Have ball at 4 up 3, settle for field goal.

There’s no way around it, this is an inexcusable loss.
— Andrew Forrest (@Andrew_Forrest1) October 25, 2026
You had multiple opportunities to put the game away. Way too often, UNC had to settle for three. Twice in the second half they forced a turnover on downs and went three & out.
And the defense couldn’t get enough stops…
This is why we can’t get all the way down the field and have our QB1 throw some BS twice and settle for a FG.

It’s simple: didn’t trust his quarterback https://t.co/LIHcCwg1Jo

Put this on Bill for playing for FGs, same thing he did against Clemson

UNC needs to leave the ACC?
Get us out of this conference.

Was GameDay ever a possibility?
welp. there goes gameday in chapel hill.

Is the Syracuse offense a 2-man game?
They have 2 players on offense. Just a brutal choke job

Fran Brown the...overtime hero?
Just an absurd stat, especially since Fran Brown has won 16 total games at Syracuse pic.twitter.com/QfUq9eq6RK

Ive been down on Fran Brown lately. That was a really good win against a team playing very well in their building

The game-winner
Former 5-star WR Calvin Russell, of @mnw_fb, wins it for Syracuse 🔥
