Michael Lombardi has resigned as the general manager of the University of North Carolina football program, effective immediately. Lombardi was previously on administrative paid leave. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.
The University of North Carolina released the following statement shortly after the news was reported:
“Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program. The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns.”
The ongoing investigation stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former football staffer. UNC had placed Lombardi on administrative
leave following the complaint.
Lombardi is the highest-paid college football general manager, earning roughly $1.5 million annually. He was Bill Belichick's first hire upon becoming head coach of the Tar Heels. Prior to joining UNC, Lombardi spent over three decades in NFL front offices, including roles with the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.
