College football is back and, wouldn't you know it, the North Carolina Tar Heels are front and center once again ahead of their 2026 campaign.
UNC begins its season on Saturday, August 29 with a 12 p.m. kickoff against TCU in Ireland. Every North Carolina football fan, plus a few student-athletes on this year's team, remembers what happened when the Horned Frogs came to Chapel Hill in 2025.
The Tar Heels started that 48-14 loss with a score on their opening drive, leading many to believe the Bill Belichick era was going to work well. A 4-8 record later, the complaints continued rolling into UNC, leading many wondering if Belichick was the right choice as head coach.
Saturday is a complete reset. North Carolina has low expectations for 2026, but
it's a new team. The Tar Heels actually have a quarterback with Power Four starting experience, a deeper running back room and a proven receiving corps, while defense returns pass-rushing prowess and reinforces with linebacker portal additions.
TCU has a brand new quarterback in Harvard transfer Jaden Craig, who threw for over 6,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the Ivy League. The Horned Frogs return most of their defense, plus a few skill positions on offense, so UNC will be facing most of their players from 2025.
North Carolina isn't expected to win, but how fun would a Week Zero upset be? Tar Heel Nation would immediately pivot to "this is our year," talking about "are we a CFP team?"

Key to Victory
Attack the Horned Frogs' secondary.
TCU safety Jacob Fields, widely expected to be a starter this season, is no longer with the program after a locker room incident.
North Carolina tabbed Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. as its starting quarterback. Despite an injury cutting his 2025 short, Edwards has over 3,400 career passing yards and 32 total touchdowns.
Edwards' performance will be a key reason why the Tar Heels play well or disappoint.
Something to watch
If UNC's defense can neutralize TCU quarterback Jaden Craig.
The Horned Frogs' new QB thrived at Harvard, throwing for over 6,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. In recent years, North Carolina's defense isn't great at facing strong quarterbacks, allowing them to torch the secondary.
The Tar Heels return key secondary players, like nickel back Kaleb Cost and safety Greg Smith. If UNC's defense can work together as a unit, Saturday's outcome will be much closer than people think.
