North Carolina could not have asked for a much better way to open Year two under Bill Belichick.
One year after TCU embarrassed the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, North Carolina flipped the script Saturday, using a dominant defensive performance to secure a 15-10 statement win over the Horned Frogs in Dublin. The Tar Heels held TCU to just 10 points and delivered in the biggest moments, showing signs that some of the questions surrounding Belichick’s program might finally have answers.
The victory was about more than revenge. North Carolina’s defense looked like a completely different unit, an emerging sophomore Xavier Lewis introduced himself as a potential star, and Ohio State transfer Jelani Thurman provided the offense with a weapon it sorely lacked
last season.
And for Belichick, who entered the season facing no shortage of scrutiny on and off the field, the performance offered something that had been difficult to find over the past year: tangible evidence that his vision for North Carolina may be starting to take shape.
Here are four takeaways from North Carolina’s season-opening victory over TCU.
The Defense Shows Up
Unlike last season where TCU put up 49 points and 542 total yards, te Horned Frogs couldn’t do squat.
The Horned Frogs only could muster 312 toital yards and 10 points. The Tar Heels stuffed the Horned Frogs on two fourth-and-short attempts deep into their own territory, including the decisive one with just over four minutes to go in the game.
The Rise of a New Defensive Powerhouse
One of the questions I had going into the season was who could step up outside the usual suspects of edge rusher Melkart Abou Jaoude and defensive back Kaleb Cost. Well, former unranked recruit and sophomore defensive tackle Xavier Lewis had an elite coming-out party.
Lewis finished the day with seven tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. He lived in TCU's backfield all game and was a key force behind North Carolina's defensive adjustments that held the Horned Frogs scoreless after the first quarter. Look for Lewis to be a top defender for Chapel Hill moving forward.
Jelani Thurman was the Story on Offense
Former Ohio State transfer Jelani Thurman was the biggest difference on offfense for the Tar Heels as he hauled in four catches for 94 yards and had three catches of 20 yards or more. Thurman is a much-needed- boost to this offense considering the tight end position was a non-factor last season.
Bill Belichick Quietens the Skeptics (At Least for the Time Being)
Despite facing persistent intense scrutiny over his direction of the Tar Heels program throughout the past year, Bill Belichick secured a key victory against a respectable TCU squad. Public skepticism had mounted following his omission from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, alongside internal turmoil—including placing general manager Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, his son, on medical leave.
While TCU faces its own share of significant off-field and structural challenges, defeating such a program remains a noteworthy achievement. Belichick’s extensive background as an NFL defensive strategist was instrumental in North Carolina's performance, particularly in shutting down the run game. Even so, this victory might only provide a temporary reprieve from his critics.
