North Carolina's two-game win streak is over and it happened in gut-wrenching fashion. The Tar Heels led for most of Saturday's game against Syracuse, even having a six-point lead late.
But a rally from Syracuse to score a touchdown late to tie it and then a two-point conversion in overtime, gave the Orange a 31-30 win in Chapel Hill.
The loss dropped UNC to 4-3 on the year and ended any momentum they had going into a showdown with No. 1 Miami on Halloween. It's a tough pill to swallow for a team that had two road wins coming into this game.
Following the game, head coach Bill Belichick met the media to discuss the loss. All quotes via Inside Carolina.
Opening Statement
“Not too much to say about this one. They made a couple more plays than we did today, and that
was the difference in the game. So, a hard-fought game, just like all the other ones we’ve seen Syracuse play. We just came a little bit short.”
On Syracuse's passing offense in first three quarters compared to the fourth quarter
“They hit a big pass. If you take that play out of there, it’s probably about the same, isn’t it?”
On not kicking on final offensive drive of regulation
“If you miss it there, you give them another seven yards, they’re almost in field goal range. So, fourth and three felt like we had a good play, and just weren’t able to convert.”
On changes in protection with Billy Edwards?
“Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. We went down and scored in the overtime. They made some plays. We made some plays. Couldn’t get any closer than that.”
On struggles stopping Syracuse on fourth down
“They converted a couple plays in fourth and not much. They were able to make the plays. We made one stop, and and they converted a couple of things.”
On seeing the final play?
“I’m was standing on the other side of the field. I mean, I couldn’t see much.”
On difficulty separating the past few weeks
“I mean we’re playing teams that are pretty evenly matched.”
