UNC baseball squad rewards head coach on Monday

Will the UNC baseball team ever win a National Championship? During June, the Diamond Heels came within one game of their first in program history.

North Carolina continues to re-load with talent each offseason, thanks to head coach Scott Forbes

. Taking over for the legendary Mike Fox ahead of 2021, Forbes led UNC to six-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by two College World Series trips in the past three seasons.

On Monday, the Diamond Heels rewarded Forbes for his hard work, signing him to a contract extension through 2032. North Carolina now has arguably the ACC's best coach under control for six more seasons.

UNC's 2025 squad carried plenty of future MLB Draft picks, like pitching ace Jake Knapp and catcher Luke Stevenson,

so the next offseason turnover rightfully created some concerns. The Diamond Heels re-loaded in 2026 with returners like Gavin Gallaher, stars like Jake Schaffner and Owen Hull, while former reserves grew into integral starters.

Forbes has over 254 wins since taking over for Fox, highlighted by three ACC Championships and a 54-win campaign in 2026. North Carolina's six-straight NCAA Tournament appearances are the most to start a coaching career in program history.

Caden Glauber, Erik Paulsen and Gavin Gallaher highlight Forbes' 2027 roster, which gives last year's squad a run for its money. UNC may very well have the country's best shortstop in William and Mary transfer Jamie Laskofski, who hit for the cycle during a weekend scrimmage vs. Charlotte.

Forbes can take any bunch of players and turn them into a winning group. His extension is only the continuation of a strong foundation already built in Chapel Hill.
