The North Carolina Tar Heels play football again this week. On Saturday, UNC (1-0) will make its long-awaited return home to Kenan Stadium.
North Carolina will host the ETSU Buccaneers for a 12 p.m. kickoff on September 12, with rain and storms on tap. Regardless of the weather, Tar Heel Nation should enter this game extremely happy.
UNC began its season with a 15-10, Week Zero upset of TCU in Ireland. North Carolina looked amazing defensively, limiting a typically-explosive Horned Frogs (0-1) offense to under 300 yards. Despite scoring just 15 points, the Tar Heels generated multiple big plays under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. UNC found itself a star tight end in Jelani Thurman, while the defensive line showed it'll be a force throughout
the fall.
ETSU won't present nearly as much of a challenge compared to TCU, but North Carolina still needs to tread carefully. After losing their season-opener in Week Zero, the Buccaneers (1-1) are fresh off a 48-14 stomping of Tusculum a weekend ago.
The Tar Heels stomped Richmond by a 41-6 mark in 2025, proving they can dominate FCS schools, even in down years. Fans only have one game for a UNC sample size in 2026, but there's plenty more encouragement after just one game.
North Carolina will need more than 15 points to beat ETSU this weekend, but what exactly needs to happen for a 2-0 start? Keep reading below, as we give our five offensive keys to a Tar Heels victory in Week 2.
Finish more drives with points
Scoring 15 points is enough to win yourself a defensive battle. The Tar Heels did exactly that in Week Zero vs. TCU, with defense making one final stop to keep TCU at 10.
North Carolina failed to finish a few drives with points, particularly when driving into Horned Frogs territory. UNC kicker Aeron Burrell made a pair of field goals, including a 20-yarder to open the scoring, but he also missed a 40-yarder to extend the lead.
If the Tar Heels truly want to show their offensive improved sizably, they need to score more points against ETSU on Saturday.
Work the Jelani Thurman connection
North Carolina lacked a true TE1 on its 2025 roster, but quickly found one on this year's roster in Ohio State transfer Jelani Thurman.
Against TCU, Thurman exploded for 94 yards on four catches, including two big catches on UNC's first drive. Jake Johnson led the Tar Heels tight end room in 2025, recording just 144 yards on 16 catches.
You know the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" North Carolina's offense needs to follow this exact saying, continuing to involve Thurman in its offensive gameplan.
Figure out who you want as RB1
Tar Heel Nation thought 2025 breakout star Demon June would start against TCU. Instead, June didn't record a carry until the fourth quarter, finishing with 25 yards on six carries.
Benjamin Hill led UNC with 36 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Jaylen McGill scored North Carolina's lone touchdown.
It's good to have a running back rotation with several playmakers, but having an established plan early will help the Tar Heels.
Continue to stay disciplined
North Carolina committed just three penalties against the Horned Frogs, allowing them to sustain offensive momentum. TCU committed 11 penalties for 90 yards, extending several UNC drives.
It's easier for better teams to try and do too much against lesser competition. The Tar Heels may very well be tempted to hold, push off defenders and prove themselves superior.
If North Carolina continues to play a disciplined style of football, it'll win big on Saturday.
Score big early and allow time for reserves to play
One of the perks playing an FCS team? The ability to find key contributors across your roster, outside of the usual starters.
Sure, Charlotte lost to Citadel during Week One, but the 49ers are a historically bad football program. UNC isn't a dominant one, but plays well enough to beat FCS teams by large margins.
If the Tar Heels build a multi-touchdown lead by halftime, they should rotate backups in at skill positions. It'll make everyone happy.
