Tar Heel Nation, this is your official welcome to the Michael Malone era. Tonight at 7 p.m., the UNC men's basketball team hosts Western Carolina to begin its highly-anticipated regular season.
North Carolina has all the looks of a deeper, more talented team from last year (24-9, 12-6 ACC), winning two of its first three preseason games. Chapel Hill native Jarin Stevenson has go-to guy written all over him, while Isaiah Denis and Jaydon Young's offseason growth give the Tar Heels a deeper bench. Once UNC finalizes its frontcourt rotation, they'll be tough to stop.
Western Carolina enters Year Three of the Tim Craft era, hoping for its first postseason appearance since 2023. The Catamounts (15-16, 10-8 Southern) play in a deep conference, losing
to ETSU in the 2026 conference tournament semifinals. WCU lost its top three scorers from a season ago, so success during its 2026-27 campaign may be tough to come by.
North Carolina won each of its first two matchups against the Catamounts: 104-61 during a December 2017 clash in Chapel Hill, preceded by a 77-59 victory in Cullowhee during the 1957-98 season.

UNC vs. Western Carolina betting odds, prediction
02:21 PM ET, November 1 2026UNC 78, WCU 62: The Tar Heels have a golden chance in front of their home crowd on Monday night, welcoming a historically mediocre Western Carolina team. The Catamounts won both their preseason games, though, while North Carolina delivered mixed results across three exhibitions. UNC will start slow, like it typically does against lesser competition. These new-look Tar Heels have a sizable talent advantage and, unlike their 2025-26 squad, depth.
