The 2026-27 college basketball season is still over a month away but the excitement at North Carolina is high.
This season will mark the first under new head coach Michael Malone, as he took over for Hubert Davis following another disappointing season. Malone will be tasked with getting this program back to where it needs to be after they have slumped over the past few years.
So far, Malone and his staff have put together their roster using the transfer portal, the 2026 recruiting class, and welcoming back a few players from last season's roster. While the roster is mostly set, there is a question in terms of transfer Cameron Fens. He committed to North Carolina in early August after the new five-for-five rule came into place.
But last week, he
was deemed ineligible due to a ruling in Kentucky. On Thursday, Malone updated the latest on Fens, who is around the team and still practicing.
“He’s eligible to work out in practice and condition," Malone said. "He is cleared to practice and play and be a part of this team.” But the process is ongoing. He obviously couldn’t play in a game if they had one today."
“I’m just thrilled that Cameron is a part of this team."
The key thing here is that Malone said he's still eligible to work out in practice and has been cleared to practice. But this is still an ongoing process not only for Fens but other players. Right now, North Carolina can't do much with Fens, as they have to wait for another ruling.
No one knows how long this could take in terms of a resolution but let's hope Fens is eligible and can play this season.
