During his nearly 50 seasons in the NFL, Bill Belichick developed himself into the GOAT coach, largely from his six Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots.
Belichick and the Pats mutually agreed to part ways after their 2023-24 campaign, which ended in a second-straight losing record. Fast forward to December 2024, the North Carolina Tar Heels hired Belichick to lead their football program.
Year Two of the Belichick era begins on Saturday, with UNC facing TCU at 12 p.m. in the first college football game of 2026. On Thursday, Belichick answered a question about a potential NFL return, highlighting his focus on North Carolina.
"I'm focused on UNC right now, absolutely," Belichick said. "I've recruited these kids, two years with them,
been with these guys. I want to help them. I had a great experience in the NFL, but I'm very happy at North Carolina. I'm excited to be there. Excited about the future of our program."
Whereas Belichick entered Year One in Chapel Hill with a bunch of Mack Brown recruits, the Tar Heels' 2026 roster has much more of a Belichick feel.
The longtime NFL head coach landed UNC an experienced, Power Four starter in Billy Edwards Jr. at quarterback, plus one of Edwards' top targets in fellow Wisconsin transfer Trech Kekahuna. Belichick snagged Patriot League standout Peyton Seelmann from Richmond, with Syracuse transfer Derek McDonald joining him on the linebacking corps.
Quarterback Travis Burgess and defensive end Zavion Griffin-Haynes chose to play their college ball at North Carolina, buying into Belichick's idea of restoring a mediocre program back to its 20th century prowess.
The Tar Heels have a loaded schedule this fall, but a much-improved roster, the latter thanks to Belichick. Can UNC turn a solid recruiting class into a bowl game or even more?
