North Carolina’s defensive line powered the Tar Heels to a 15-10 victory over TCU at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday, stifling the Horned Frogs after a shaky start.
The win marked a significant turnaround for North Carolina which relied on a dominant second-half performance from its front four to avenge a lopsided loss to TCU last season. After allowing 111 rushing yards in the first half, the defensive front adjusted to hold the Horned Frogs to just 26 rushing yards on 22 attempts in the second half. This pressure forced TCU into passing situations, disrupting the rhythm of quarterback Jaden Craig.
Leading the charge was the starting defensive line, anchored by ends Melkart Abou-Jaoude and Jaylen Harvey and interior linemen Leroy
Jackson and Xavier Lewis. The group recorded 24 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Lewis recorded seven tackles, two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. His most critical play came just before halftime, when he made a key stop in the backfield that shifted momentum in North Carolina's favor.
"It was a great team effort," Lewis insisted after the game. "I had a little bit to do with it, but they help me out a lot."
Abou-Jaoude, the ACC’s second-leading sacker last season, also made a crucial impact. After a quiet first half, he broke through the line in the third quarter for a strip-sack that Jaylen Harvey recovered. The turnover effectively broke TCU's offensive momentum.
Bill Belichick lauded the team’s disciplined play, which forced the Horned Frogs into predictable passing scenarios.
The defensive success was a collective effort, as rotation players such as nose tackle Isaiah Johnson, Donovan Hoilette and David Jackson contributed to the sustained pressure throughout the afternoon.
The Tar Heels' defense held TCU to one conversion on five fourth-down attempts and forced 11 penalties for 100 yards. The victory brings UNC to 1-0 on the season.
