Not a lot of people are expecting the Los Angeles Lakers to do impressive things this season, other than perhaps being an excellent offensive team. But numerous players on the roster seem optimistic about the upcoming season, and Luka Doncic seems to be as trim and fit as he has ever been.
Bronny James may not end up breaking into coach JJ Redick's rotation this season, and he may not even get any playing time. But the 21-year-old guard seems to have the right idea as far as the type of role he needs to play offensively alongside Doncic and Austin Reaves and what he needs to improve on.
During a recent appearance on ESPN L.A. 710, James said that the vibes on the team are positive right now, especially coming off the minicamp Doncic recently held
in Slovenia.
“Everyone’s great,” James said. “We’ve been in the gym working. It’s good vibes everywhere. I think that, again, the Slovenia trip helped because we got back home, we got to work and it’s coming around.”
Not only should that minicamp help give this new-look Lakers squad a head start on building cohesiveness, but it also allowed players to bond together. In addition to actual basketball work, they had the opportunity to play some golf and do other fun activities.
James improved his 3-point shooting last season and made 38.6% of his attempts from that distance, but he still has a long way to go to prove that he's worthy of a spot in a good team's rotation on his own merits. But by all accounts, his work ethic and attitude are solid, and combined with his 6-foot-7 wingspan and 40.5-inch vertical leap, perhaps he still has a real chance of sticking around in the NBA.
