A stunning development took place on Wednesday when Mark Walter, the majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, agreed to sell his share of the storied NBA franchise to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a reported $12.5 billion.
This news came out of left field, as Walter had only officially purchased his share of the Lakers in October 2025 once the transaction was approved by the league.
Obviously, one has to wonder how this will affect how the team will be run and what type of impact that will have on its chances of winning the NBA championship in the near future. Franchise player Luka Doncic doesn't seem too concerned -- he issued a positive statement on X (formerly Twitter) about the impending sale and wrote that he's looking forward to meeting
the new co-owners.
"Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA," Doncic wrote. "I’ve gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise. I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together."

Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, is 41 years of age and is the founder of Thrive Capital, a venture capital firm. He's also one of the co-founders of Oscar Health, a health insurance company, and he currently owns a minority stake in the Miami Heat.
Iger, meanwhile, has had two stints as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company and helped grow Disney's market capitalization value during his time there.
Doncic, 27, is coming off an MVP-caliber season during which he averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game. He was named the Western Conference Player of the Month in January and March.
