Right now, most of the Buss family, which has owned at least part of the Los Angeles Lakers since 1979, is looking to sell its remaining 17.8% share of the franchise. Jeanie Buss, the Lakers' governor and the one Buss sibling who is opposed to selling, is committed to putting up a fight and holding on to her current role with the franchise.
In the meantime, Joey Buss and Jesse Buss are getting involved in another venture. Per Dave McMenamin of ESPN, they have joined the ownership group of Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres.
"Buss Sports Capital has joined Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano's San Diego Padres ownership group, Joey and Jesse Buss announced Wednesday," McMenamin wrote.
"The longtime Los Angeles Lakers executives started the
investment firm after their family sold its majority ownership share of the Lakers to billionaire businessman Mark Walter last year. The firm aims to identify acquisitions and partnerships across the global sports landscape.
"Joey and Jesse announced they will be on the new ownership group's advisory board and apply their experience with player development, payroll management and roster construction to support this new era in Padres franchise history. Their stake in the Padres is in the neighborhood of 5%, sources told ESPN."
It seems a bit strange that both Buss brothers are getting involved with the Padres when Walter is the primary owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams play in the National League West, and as of Wednesday night, the Dodgers are 8.5 games ahead of San Diego with an 80-53 record.
Walter recently agreed to sell the majority stake in the Lakers he bought from the Buss siblings to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. The Buss siblings, other than Jeanie Buss, are looking to sell their remaining minority stake to Kushner and Iger.
Jeanie Buss is reportedly open to finding a scenario where she would stay on as the Lakers' governor, even if all of her siblings still give up their shares of the franchise. For that to happen, she would have to own at least 15% of the team.
