Luka Doncic recently held a minicamp for his Los Angeles Lakers teammates in his native country of Slovenia, and it gave everyone an opportunity to get ready for the upcoming NBA season, as well as bond and get to know one another.
In a video from that minicamp, Doncic looked notably slimmer, and fans took notice. He had already slimmed down and gotten into much better shape last summer, and it looks like he's perhaps even fitter in advance of the 2026-27 campaign.
Dirk Nowitzki, the Hall of Famer who played his last season with Doncic when Doncic was a rookie on the Dallas Mavericks, said during a recent interview that he's impressed with how the two-time scoring champion looks.
“He look clean, I gotta say,” Nowitzki said. “He look tan, he look slim,
he look ready to go.”
The 2007 league MVP also commented on the moves the Lakers made on their new-look roster.
“Obviously, the Lakers also went through some changes with some new teammates and LeBron [James] leaving, and it’s going to be interesting to see. They brought in [Walker] Kessler, obviously a big center that they were looking for.
“I think they also made some nice moves that is going to make them better, and Luka looked incredible there. I saw him there in March when he had 1,000, 2,000 points. It was incredible, the run he was on. Unfortunately, he got hurt right towards the playoffs.
“But if he’s healthy and he’s ready to go, he’s going to have a great season for sure.”
Doncic has indeed fully healed from the hamstring strain that prematurely ended his season on April 2. He had a fantastic season to that point, averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game, and he got a bit of MVP consideration as a result.
With James gone, everyone will have to pull a little more weight. Luckily, L.A. has a more balanced roster, especially offensively, and that should take a little pressure off Doncic once the new season starts.
