Colby Covington has no doubt that he will break Khamzat Chimaev at RAF Abu Dhabi.
Covington defends his RAF cruiserweight crossover title against Chimaev in the Nov. 14 main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The event will stream live on FOX Nation.
A war of words has been brewing for a while now, and Covington can't wait to settle things with Chimaev on the mats.
"To go up against Chimaev, who's been talking sh*t with me for years, saying he could beat me in this, could beat me in that, he can't beat me in anything," Covington told MMA Junkie. "He can't beat me in a wrestling match, he can't beat me in a fight, he definitely can't beat me in a looks competition because that dude is ugly as a dog.
"But besides that, Sean Strickland made him butt-scooting
in six minutes. I'm going to do it in half the time. I'm going to have him on his back, butt-scooting in three minutes. He's going to be like a dirty dog who has diarrhea trying to scoot his bottom across the floor."
Chimaev is also unbeaten on the RAF mats, but Covington hasn't been impressed with his recent wins over Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler.
"He's wrestled a lot of guys that are over the hill, a lot of guys that are washed up, that don't have the fight still left in," Covington said. "They don't have the wrestling ability in them, you know? These are guys on the other side of 40, and these are guys that are just coming to collect paychecks. I'm not coming to collect a paycheck. I'm coming to take Khamzat's L, I'm coming to take his undefeated record, I'm coming to take his soul. I want to beat this guy so badly, he never says another word about me for the rest of his life. He's had so many things to say about me in the past, and now he's going to find out what a real warrior, what a real guy with a heart that's going to come at him for six minutes straight.
"We know he has cardio issues. He's faded in a lot of fights. Gilbert Burns broke him, the fight with Strickland, he's pulling guard, pulling on his back like a little baby girl. It was just weird, so he just shows that quitter, and I'm going to bring the quitter out in him. Six minutes with me on a wrestling mat. I've been doing this my whole life. He doesn't understand what freestyle wrestling is. This is my bread and butter. So, I'm going to break him, and I'm going to shut him up, and I'm going to silence him, so he's never able to say anything about me ever again."
Covington has put together an impressive resume at RAF with wins over the likes of former UFC champions Chris Weidman and Belal Muhammad, as well as Arman Tsarukyan. Although Chimaev has proven to be a physical specimen during grappling exchanges, Covington argues it's come against much smaller guys.
"Defensively, I don't see anything special," Covington said of Chimaev. "I actually see a guy that looks like an amateur. He got taken down by Gilbert Burns, a jiu-jitsu fighter, not a guy that knows how to shoot takedowns or do any wrestling. This guy took him down, Gilbert Burns, so that's pathetic. And then from an offensive standpoint, all he's done in RAF is bully guys and just have weight advantages over guys. Look at these guys he's going up against. He went up against Gilbert. Gilbert was, complaining, like, dude, I'm not a 200-pound wrestler. I fight at 170, why am I competing at 200? Same thing, Woodley was fighting him, he's a '70-pounder.
"This is a guy that weighs maybe 185. Chimaev's coming down from 215. He's a big guy so, all he's done is just overpower guys, just bully guys. He's a weight bully, and that's all he's been able to do is weight bully. He's not going to be able to weight bully me. I know how to move my feet, I know how to switch the angle up, I know how to hang tough in the hand fight. He's going to get frustrated. He's probably going to take some cheap shots, but it's not going to make a difference. I'm going to tech-fall him, and I'm going to retain my No. 1 pound-for-pound status as the cruiserweight crossover champion of the world."
