LAS VEGAS – Gabriel Lorenco is one of two heavyweight signees thus far on the current season of Dana White's Contender Series – and he thinks there's not enough room for both of them.
Following his DWCS 90 victory Tuesday that earned him a UFC deal, Lorenco (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) immediately set his sights on Anthony Wint (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), the fighter who earned a contract four weeks prior.
"I do believe that I'm going to be making my debut by the end of the year, by December or end of the year," Lorenco told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter after the fight. "A guy that I thought would be real interesting, I just don't know his first name, Wint. Anthony Wint. I think it'd be cool matchmaking there. I think it'd be a great fight."
Lorenco, 28, seemed to make the callout not out of anger, but out of flattery. Wint, 30, already made his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 285, when he quickly submitted Terrance Chatman (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC).
"I like his style," Lorenco said. "I like the fact that the guy is aggressive. I think it'll be good matchmaking. Let's go get in there. If Dana likes the idea, then why not?"
Lorenco brought the violence to Meta APEX with a big looping right hand that marked the beginning of the end for opponent Charlie Cleveland (6-2). After Lorenco pounced and landed a series of hammerfists, the bout was waved off 2:02 into Round 1. It was his seventh professional first-round finish – and he doesn't plan on breaking that trend any time soon.
"I've had one three-round fight, but I like to do quick work," Lorenco said. "It's shock and awe. You come in here, and that's what people want. The people want to put on a show. Nobody wants to watch three boring rounds of anything. That's why we come in here. We come in here to finish the fight. ... Every fight is going to be a show. We're coming in to do this. We want to make real history here."
"... I think I'm going to make some noise in the division. I think I'm going to knock some people out. I know I'm going to take some people down, and that's what I think."
